🌍 Malaria is a serious mosquito-borne infection found in many parts of Africa, Asia, Central and South America and other tropical regions.
🦟 Our pharmacists provide personalised travel risk assessments to help you choose the most appropriate malaria prevention option for your destination, medical history and travel plans.
What Is Malaria?
Malaria is a potentially serious and sometimes life-threatening infection spread through the bite of infected mosquitoes.
🦟 Spread through bites from infected Anopheles mosquitoes
🌍 Found in many tropical and subtropical regions worldwide
🤒 Symptoms may include fever, chills, sweats, headaches and flu-like illness
⚠️ Severe malaria can lead to serious complications and hospitalisation
🚑 Malaria symptoms can develop during travel or even weeks after returning home
The ABCD of Malaria Prevention
Effective malaria prevention combines multiple protective measures.
🅰️ Awareness of risk — understanding whether malaria is present in your destination
🅱️ Bite prevention — reducing mosquito exposure
🅲️ Chemoprophylaxis — taking anti-malarial medication where appropriate
🅳️ Diagnose promptly — seeking urgent medical advice if symptoms develop
📌 No malaria prevention method is 100% effective, so combining bite prevention and appropriate medication is extremely important.
Anti-Malarial Medications We May Supply
Following a travel risk assessment, we may supply one of several anti-malarial medicines depending on your destination, health history and travel style.
💊
Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone®) Malaria Tablets
Daily anti-malarial tablets often suitable for short trips and last-minute travel.
💊
Doxycycline for Malaria Prevention
Daily anti-malarial tablets commonly used for backpacking and longer travel durations.
💊
Mefloquine (Lariam®) Malaria Tablets
Weekly anti-malarial tablets which may suit some longer trips and travellers preferring weekly dosing.
🩺 Medication choice depends on your destination, duration of travel, medical history, current medicines, pregnancy status and personal suitability.
Common Malaria Tablet Schedules
Different anti-malarial medicines are started at different times before travel and continued for different periods after leaving the malaria-risk area.
💊 Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone®)
Start 1-2 days before entering the malaria-risk area, take daily during travel and continue for 7 days after leaving.
💊 Doxycycline
Start 1-2 days before travel, take daily during travel and continue for 4 weeks after leaving the malaria-risk area.
💊 Mefloquine (Lariam®)
Usually started at least 2-3 weeks before travel, taken weekly during travel and continued for 4 weeks after leaving the malaria-risk area.
📌 Starting anti-malarials early allows time to assess tolerability and ensure appropriate protection before travel.
Mosquito Bite Prevention Advice
Bite prevention is an essential part of malaria prevention, even when taking anti-malarial tablets.
🦟 Use insect repellent containing DEET where appropriate
👕 Wear long sleeves and long trousers in mosquito-prone areas
🛏️ Sleep under mosquito nets where necessary
🏨 Use air-conditioned or screened accommodation where possible
