Cholera Vaccination at Neils Pharmacy

Cholera Travel Vaccine in Prescot

At Neils Pharmacy, we provide private Cholera vaccination for travellers visiting areas where cholera infection may be a risk.

🌍 Cholera is a serious diarrhoeal illness usually spread through contaminated food or water in areas with poor sanitation or limited access to clean drinking water.

🚰 Vaccination may be recommended for humanitarian workers, backpackers, long-stay travellers and people travelling to outbreak or disaster-affected regions.

What Is Cholera?

Cholera is an acute bacterial infection caused by Vibrio cholerae, mainly spread through contaminated food and water.

💧 Infection can cause severe watery diarrhoea and dehydration

🤢 Vomiting and stomach symptoms may also occur

⚠️ Severe infection can become life-threatening if untreated

🌍 Risk is greatest in areas with poor sanitation or disrupted water supplies

🧼 Careful food, water and hand hygiene remain important even after vaccination

Who May Need Cholera Vaccination?

Cholera vaccination may be recommended depending on your destination, travel style, duration of stay and access to clean water and medical care.

🌍 Travellers visiting cholera outbreak regions

🎒 Backpackers and long-stay travellers

🚰 Travellers with limited access to safe food or drinking water

🏕️ Aid workers, humanitarian workers and disaster response teams

🏥 Individuals with underlying health conditions increasing dehydration risk

🧪 Laboratory workers regularly exposed to cholera bacteria

📌 Your pharmacist will assess your destination, accommodation, sanitation access and travel activities before advising whether cholera vaccination is recommended.

Cholera Vaccine Schedule

💉 Cholera vaccination is usually provided as an oral vaccine course taken by mouth rather than by injection.

📅 Adults and children aged 6 years and over: usually 2 oral doses taken at least 1 week apart

👶 Children aged 2 to below 6 years: usually 3 oral doses

✈️ Vaccination should ideally be completed at least 1 week before travel

🔁 Booster doses may be recommended for ongoing risk or repeat travel

📌 Your pharmacist will advise the most appropriate schedule based on your age, travel dates and risk level

🚰 Food and drink should usually be avoided for 1 hour before and after taking the oral vaccine.

Food & Water Hygiene Advice

Cholera prevention relies heavily on good food, water and hand hygiene practices while travelling.

💧 Drink bottled, boiled or appropriately treated water

🧊 Avoid ice unless you know it was made using safe water

🍴 Eat freshly cooked food served hot

🥗 Avoid raw or poorly washed foods where hygiene standards are uncertain

🧼 Wash hands regularly or use alcohol hand gel where handwashing facilities are limited

Humanitarian & Disaster Relief Travel

Cholera risk may increase significantly in regions affected by natural disasters, displacement or breakdown of sanitation systems.

🌍 Humanitarian aid deployments may involve higher exposure risk

🏕️ Refugee camps and emergency accommodation settings may have limited sanitation

🚰 Flooding and natural disasters can contaminate water supplies

🏥 Access to prompt medical care may be limited in remote or unstable regions

Traveller’s Diarrhoea & Cholera

Cholera vaccination does not protect against all causes of traveller’s diarrhoea or stomach infections.

⚠️ Many different bacteria, viruses and parasites can cause diarrhoeal illness abroad

🚰 Safe food and water precautions remain essential

💧 Oral rehydration is important if diarrhoea develops while travelling

🏥 Seek medical advice urgently if symptoms are severe or persistent
